What Should Be in a Pre-Workout? A Label Checklist
Most pre-workout labels are built to look dosed, not to be dosed. Here is the checklist a label reader actually uses: clinically studied dose ranges, zero proprietary blends, and the stimulant math, mapped against Gladiatore's printed panel so you can run the same audit on any tub on the shelf.

What should be in a pre-workout is not a mystery: every dose printed on the label, hitting the clinically studied ranges. That means roughly 6 to 8g L-citrulline, 4 to 6g beta-alanine, about 2.5g betaine, and 3 to 6mg of caffeine per kilogram of bodyweight, with no proprietary blends hiding the amounts. If a number is missing, assume it is under-dosed.
Updated July 2026. This is a category-level guide, not a product pitch. The goal is that by the end you can pick up any pre-workout tub, flip it over, and grade the panel in about thirty seconds. There are twelve or so ingredients that actually earn a place in a pre-workout, and the peer-reviewed literature gives most of them a dose window where they do something. The trick the industry runs is to name those ingredients and then dose them below that window, or bury the amounts inside a blend so you cannot check. The checklist below is built to catch both moves.
What should be in a pre-workout, at minimum?
At minimum, a pre-workout worth buying should carry a nitric-oxide precursor for blood flow, a buffer for muscular endurance, a stimulant for drive, and it should print the dose of each. Everything past that is refinement. Miss any of those three jobs, or hide the doses, and you are holding a flavored stimulant with marketing on it.
Here is the short version of what belongs in the tub, by job:
- Pump and blood flow. L-citrulline (or citrulline malate), ideally with L-arginine dosed high enough to matter. This is the ingredient most often faked with a token amount.
- Muscular endurance and buffering. Beta-alanine is the anchor, and sodium bicarbonate is a legitimate second buffer that almost nobody includes.
- Power and cellular hydration. Betaine anhydrous, at the dose the research used, not a pinch.
- Energy and focus. Caffeine as the primary stimulant, ideally paired with L-theanine to smooth the edge and something like L-tyrosine to support focus under fatigue.
- The foundation. Electrolytes and a vitamin are fine, but they are the garnish. If they are the most impressive thing on the panel, the panel is thin.
Notice what is not on that list: a dozen exotic-sounding trademark ingredients at 50mg each. Length of ingredient list is not quality. Dose is quality. A four-ingredient panel dosed correctly beats a fourteen-ingredient panel fairy-dusted every time.
What are the clinically studied doses to check against?
The clinically studied doses are the whole checklist, because an ingredient below its studied dose is decoration. These are the ranges the peer-reviewed literature and the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) position stands keep landing on, and they are the numbers you hold every label up against.
Here is the mapping. Read it as three columns collapsed into each line: the ingredient, the dose research associates with an effect, and what Gladiatore's printed panel actually shows for that ingredient. Do this same comparison against any tub you are considering.
- L-citrulline malate. Research supports roughly 6 to 8g taken before training (one frequently cited crossover study used 8g). Gladiatore's label shows 7g of L-citrulline malate 2:1, sitting near the top of that window.
- L-arginine. Only useful at multiple grams, because oral arginine is largely cleared by intestinal arginase before it reaches the blood. Gladiatore's label shows 7g, layered alongside the citrulline rather than a token 500mg.
- Beta-alanine. The ISSN clusters effective intake around 4 to 6g per day (roughly 3.2 to 6.4g). Gladiatore's label shows 4g, inside the band.
- Betaine anhydrous. Trials commonly use about 2.5g per day for power output. Gladiatore's label shows 4g, above the classic study dose.
- Caffeine. The ISSN caffeine position stand associates roughly 3 to 6mg per kilogram of bodyweight with performance effects (about 240 to 480mg for an 80kg lifter). Gladiatore's label shows 400mg, a high but bounded dose that sits inside that range for most trained adults.
- L-theanine. Studied for focus most often near a 2:1 ratio to caffeine. Gladiatore's label shows 800mg against the 400mg caffeine, exactly 2:1.
- L-tyrosine. Looked at in the gram range for cognition under stress. Gladiatore's label shows 1g.
- Sodium bicarbonate. A recognized extracellular buffer for high-intensity work. Gladiatore's label shows 800mg of sodium delivered as bicarbonate, doing double duty as an electrolyte.
That is the unique thing to internalize: every line above is a number you can verify, and a fully dosed pre-workout will survive that comparison line by line. A weak one falls apart the moment you ask what the dose actually is. Why do proprietary blends hide sub-clinical doses?
Proprietary blends exist so a brand can name expensive ingredients while dosing them at a fraction of the studied amount, because the format only requires the total weight of the blend, not the amount of each thing inside it. That is not a conspiracy theory. It is the FDA labeling rule, and it is used exactly this way.
Under the rules, a brand has to print the blend's name, its combined weight, and the ingredients in descending order by weight. It never has to tell you how much of each. So a "Pump and Power Matrix 6,000mg" can be mostly cheap filler up top and a sprinkle of the citrulline you came for at the bottom, and the label is still technically honest. The industry term for that sprinkle is fairy dusting: just enough of an ingredient to legally name it, nowhere near enough to work.
The checklist move here is simple and absolute. If the panel shows a blend name with one total weight and no per-ingredient doses, you cannot grade it, which means you should assume the worst, because a brand dosing correctly has no reason to hide the numbers. One analysis of 100 commercial pre-workout labels found that roughly 44% of listed ingredients were buried in proprietary blends with no disclosed amount. That is the norm, not the exception. How do you check the caffeine math on a label?
You check the caffeine math by finding the per-serving caffeine number, confirming it is an actual number and not hidden in an "energy blend," and then adding it to every other caffeine source in your day against a rough 400mg daily ceiling for healthy adults. If the label will not tell you the milligrams, that is a red flag on its own.
The FDA has noted that for healthy adults, around 400mg of caffeine per day (about four or five cups of coffee) is not generally associated with negative effects. Read that as a daily figure, not a per-scoop permission slip. A few things to run every time:
- Find the exact milligrams. A cup of coffee is about 95mg for reference. If a full serving is 350mg or more, you are in high-stim territory and it should be treated that way.
- Add up the whole day. Pre-workout caffeine plus coffee plus an energy drink is one total, not three separate budgets. Count it as one number.
- Respect who it is for. A high-caffeine formula is built for experienced, stimulant-tolerant adults. It is the wrong product for anyone caffeine-sensitive, and the label should say so.
- Look for a start-low instruction. A responsible high-stim label tells you to begin with a half serving to assess tolerance. Its absence tells you something.

What separates a transparent label from a marketing one?
A transparent label invites you to audit it, and a marketing label is built to stop you. That is the cleanest tell in the category, and once you see it you cannot unsee it. Everything else is detail.
Run these final checks and you have graded the tub:
- Is every active dose printed individually? If yes, the brand is handing you the means to check its work. If the doses live inside a blend total, they are hiding the one thing that matters.
- Do the printed doses hit the studied ranges? Use the mapping above. A real formula clears most of them; a poser clears almost none.
- Is the ingredient form specified? "L-citrulline malate 2:1" tells you the pure yield; "citrulline malate" with no ratio does not. Specificity is a sign of a formulator who expects to be checked.
- Does the safety framing match the potency? A high-stim panel with no start-low instruction is a brand that has not thought about you, or is hoping you will not think either.
- Would a coach be able to verify it in thirty seconds? If the answer is no, the label was built to be admired, not audited.
How does Gladiatore's label map to the checklist?

Run each of those against the mapping earlier in this post. They hold up because they were dosed to hold up, and because we would rather you verify the numbers than trust us on them.
The honest part of transparency is that it cuts both ways. A printed 400mg of caffeine plus 2.5mg of yohimbine is a high-stimulant load, and we will say plainly that Gladiatore is built for experienced lifters, fighters, and combat athletes who already tolerate stimulants. What is the single most important thing to check on a pre-workout label?
Whether every active ingredient has its own printed dose. If the amounts are hidden inside a proprietary blend, you cannot verify that anything is dosed to work, and the safest assumption is that the expensive ingredients are under-dosed. A transparent, fully disclosed panel is the one thing that makes every other check on this list possible.
How many ingredients should a good pre-workout have?
There is no magic number, and a long list is not a quality signal. What matters is that the ingredients present are dosed at the amounts research actually used. A short panel dosed correctly (a real pump ingredient, a real buffer, a real stimulant, all printed) beats a long panel where most items are fairy-dusted below their studied ranges.
Is more caffeine always better in a pre-workout?
No. Caffeine has a studied range of roughly 3 to 6mg per kilogram of bodyweight, and past your personal tolerance you get jitters and a harder crash rather than more performance. The daily ceiling for healthy adults sits around 400mg total from all sources. A higher number on the label is not a better product; the right number for your bodyweight and tolerance is.
What does "clinically dosed" actually mean?
It means an ingredient is present at the amount used in the studies that found an effect, not just present in name. Beta-alanine at 4g is clinically dosed; beta-alanine at 400mg is a label decoration. The word only has meaning if you can see the number and compare it to the research, which is why hidden blends and "clinically dosed" claims rarely appear together honestly.
Why do some labels list an ingredient but it still does nothing?
Because presence is not dose. A formula can legally name citrulline, arginine, or betaine while including a fraction of a gram, well below any amount research associates with a benefit. That is the entire economic reason proprietary blends exist: they let a brand print an impressive-sounding ingredient list while spending on almost none of it. Check the grams, not the names.
Can I trust a pre-workout that uses a proprietary blend?
You can use one, but you cannot verify it, and in this category those are very different things. A blend discloses only the combined weight, so you are trusting a per-ingredient number the brand will not show you. If a company is confident its formula is dosed correctly, printing the amounts costs it nothing, so the choice to hide them is information in itself.
